PAPER
BAAL
2014-2021
The Paper Baal project was created as a reflection on the material form of the embodiment of time.
Having worked in printing houses since 2011, the author has noted the fleeting nature and futility of paper production. In the digital age, this material has ceased to be the primary canvas for text, yet, out of inertia, it continues to be used for short-term, insignificant purposes.
Advertising brochures, information leaflets, flyers, food packaging—all these products last no longer than 10 minutes in the hands of the consumer, and then are consigned to oblivion in a landfill or recycling. "Paper Baal" is a way to extend the life of used trees into eternity.
The sculpture is exhibited alongside several preserved documents, from which it was created. Health certificates for deceased pets, bank loan agreements, the packaging of a lost meal, an advertisement for bedbug extermination. All these pieces of paper, one way or another, played a role in the life of an individual, representing a specific period of time.
The "red thread" is an additional, supporting and unifying element for the sculpture, hinting at the connection between all the smallest events, actions or inactions in the context of a single life.
